Japansk og Nepalsk Papirlaging / Japanese and Nepalese Papermaking | Taught by Johan Solberg

In this workshop, participants will learn how to make paper in 2 different ways and also learn about the history of papermaking. They will learn about fiber processing (cooking, scraping, cleaning, beating fibers) and turning these into translucent and strong Japanese and Nepalese-style papers.
Considered the earliest method of papermaking, Nepalese paper is made in a wooden frame with stretched cloth (paper mould). The paper is formed and dried in the mould itself, meaning one frame is needed per sheet of paper. This method evolved in China around year 250 BCE.

We will explore this same fiber (kozo) further but using a different method–nagashizuki, for Japanese Papermaking. In this completely different papermaking style, students will learn how to make sheets that are different in weight, style and texture.

At the end of the workshop, students will have a stack of two types of handmade papers from two very different parts of the world. In addition, you will have gained a foundation for making paper on your own.
På dette kurset skal vi jobbe med to forskjellige måter å lage papir ved bruk av innerbarken til Morbærtreet. Disse historiske metodene er like relevante i dag som for 2000 år siden! Vi vil gjennomgå hele prosessen fra bark til papir, kun ved bruk av håndverktøy.
En av de tidligste metodene for papirtilvirkning finner vi fortsatt i dagens Nepal. Papiret formes i en treramme med en oppspent tøystykke og tørkes deretter i selve formen, noe som krever én papirform per ark. Denne metoden er kanskje den første metoden for papirtilvirkning som ble utviklet i Kina rundt år 250 fvt.
Ved bruk av samme fiber skal vi lage papir etter Japansk tradisjon som vil gi deg et dypere innblikk i håndverkets utvikling, samt gi deg muligheten til å lage papir med ulik tykkelse og tekstur som kan brukes til dine papirrelaterte prosjekter.
Etter endt kurs vil du ha to bunker med papir og ny kunnskap om to forskjellige papirtilvirkningsprosesser, samt et godt grunnlag for å lage papir hjemme eller i eget studio.
About the Instructor
Johan Solberg is a bookbinder and papermaker with an MFA in book arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. His work explores the intersection of artistic research and craft, combining both historical and contemporary techniques and materials. Solberg’s thesis work focused on the history of papermaking in Central Asia, and he continues to research and teach papermaking techniques from different parts of the world.
Johan Solberg er bokbinder og papirmaker med en mastergrad i bokkunst fra the University of Iowa, Center for the Book. Solberg jobber i kryssningspunktet mellom artistic research og tradisjonelle håndverk, gjennom arbeid med både historiske og moderne teknikker og materialer. Solbergs masteroppgave fokuserte på papirhåndverkets historie i Sentral Asia, og han jobber i dag med forskning og formidling av papirhåndverket fra ulike deler av verden.
